Student ID Cards

Washington University Student ID Cards for all Danforth (hilltop) campus students are issued by the Office of Student Records, located in the Ann W. Olin Women’s Building. Medical school students are issued identification cards through the Registrar’s Office at the School of Medicine, located in the McDonnell Science Building on the medical school campus. Student ID Cards issued from either campus are valid throughout the University so multiple cards are not needed (please note: there are some areas of the medical school which do require that a med school ID Card be physically displayed).

The WU Student ID Card displays the student’s name and ID number, color photograph, academic division code, and the date of issue. New students are encouraged to obtain an ID Card upon matriculation and are provided an initial card at no cost. Incoming freshmen are typically notified during the summer that they may send a photo in advance so that their Student ID Card is ready when they arrive on campus for Orientation in August.

Note: WU employees receive Faculty/Staff ID cards from the Human Resources Office in North Brookings Hall. Individuals who have multiple relationships with WU (e.g., staff and student) will receive only one WU identification card which reflects their primary relationship to the University. Full-time faculty and staff who take classes at WU will not be issued student ID cards by the Office of Student Records. Full-time students who work part-time at WU will not be issued staff cards by the Human Resources office.

All Washington University students should carry their WU Student ID Card whenever they are on campus or using the campus shuttle and Metro UPass. During periods of heightened security, access to the campus may be limited to those Washington University students, faculty and staff in possession of a current valid WU identification card.

Card Access and Campus Card Services

A Washington University Student ID Card provides current students with restricted access to various campus buildings and labs, as well as the residence halls, athletic complex, and the WU shuttle system. The Student ID card may also be used for library privileges, meal plans, and admission to student activities.

If you are having difficulty with door access or card functions, contact the office indicated below or click on the link provided.

Note: the magnetic stripes on the back of your card are critical to the functional use of the card. To prevent these from damage, keep your card away from all magnetic fields that may demagnetize the stripes. Do not place your card on or near a computer, television, stereo, stereo speaker, microwave, cell phone, or other electromagnetic device. Do not store your card where it may bend or come in direct contact with other magnetized cards. Damage or misuse of the card may render it unusable.

Damaged or Updated Cards

A Student ID Card may occasionally require replacement. A fee is not charged if the student's current card is exchanged for a new card. For a name change or correction, documentation of the student’s legal name is required (driver’s license, passport, marriage license, etc.). Old WU Student ID Cards which display a Social Security Number may be exchanged at any time for a new card displaying the Student ID number. Only current students may receive replacement ID cards.

Lost or Stolen Cards

Lost or stolen Student ID Cards on the Danforth (hilltop) campus can be replaced at the Office of Student Records in the Women’s Building. The student must present some other form of positive identification (picture ID) to replace a lost or stolen card. There is a $20 charge for the replacement of a lost card.

Note: The lending, selling or illegal production of identification cards is strictly prohibited. Washington University identification cards remain the property of the University. The use of a WU Student ID card by anyone other than that student is prohibited and may constitute a violation of the University Judicial Code (the UJB sanction for fraudulent use of an ID Card can be a fine of $250 or greater). Students are encouraged to guard their Student ID Card as they would a driver's license, credit cards, or cash. The University reserves the right to deny card privileges to a student if WU Student ID Cards are repeatedly lost.
