Life Insurance

The University offers its employees and their families four different plans to meet their individual life insurance needs through the convenience of payroll deduction.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Regular full time (100% FTE) faculty or staff members are eligible for free term insurance after six months of continuous service. Regular part time faculty or staff members ( working 50% - 99% FTE) are eligible for other plans.

Eligible employees may enroll in one of the following plans:
  • MetLife (Term)
  • MetLife (Variable Universal)

    WU COUPLES POLICY

    COVERAGES
  • Free term life insurance of 100% of full time employee's annual base salary (after six months of continuous service)
  • Supplemental term life insurance of 1, 2, 3 or 4 times employee's annual base salary
  • Dependent term life insurance of $25,000, $50,000, $75,000 or $100,000 for spouse and/or $4,000 for dependent children
  • Universal life insurance of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 times employee's annual base salary

    ENROLLMENT PERIOD
    Eligible employees may enroll within 31 days after their date of hire and/or at any time thereafter with the submission of a health statement.

    EFFECTIVE DATE
    Supplemental term life, dependent term life, and Universal Life are effective the first of the month coincident with or following date of hire and/or the first day of the month following the date that the health statement is approved by the insurance carrier. Free life insurance for full time employees is effective after six months of continuous service.

    WILL PREPARATION SERVICE AT NO CHARGE

    Washington University Faculty and Staff employees enrolled in MetLife's Optional Term Life insurance plan have access to an important service, Will Preparation. Will Preparation is a service offered by Hyatt Legal Plans, a MetLife company. The service provides Optional Term Life plan participating employees and their spouses with access to a participating plan attorney for preparing or updating a Will. This service covers the legal fees when using a participating attorney.
