Washington University in St. Louis is an independent research university offering academic
programs of study in seven schools: Arts & Sciences, Business, Design & Visual Arts, Engineering & Applied
Science, Law, Medicine, and Social Work. Within the schools are various divisions of undergraduate and graduate
study. The “day school” divisions at WU represent traditional full-time programs. In addition to the day divisions,
evening and part-time divisions are offered in the schools of Arts & Sciences (the University College),
Business, Design & Visual Arts, and Engineering & Applied Science. WU currently offers two professional
degree programs, the Medicinae Doctoris in the School of Medicine and the Juris Doctoris in the School of Law.
Undergraduate and Graduate Enrollment
The current student enrollment at Washington University is 13,761 (per data captured at the
end of the 10th week of the Fall 2009 semester on on November 3, 2009).
We have 7,110 students enrolled in our undergraduate programs; 6,194 are in the day school
divisions, and 916 are enrolled in undergraduate evening and part-time programs.
Our graduate student enrollment of 6,651 includes 5,907 students in the day school
divisions and professional programs, and 744 students in graduate level evening and part-time programs.

Gender and Ethnicity
As a university, we enroll fairly equal percentages of women (50.67%) and men (49.33%). At the
graduate level the percentage of male and female is the same (50%), while at the undergraduate level the
percentage of females is higher ( 51%).
Ethnically, the majority of our students are White non-Hispanic (55.7%). Our minority population is approximately 10.6%
Asian, 6.1% Black non-Hispanic, 2.5% Hispanic, 2.8% multi-racial, and less than 1% Native American (9.1% unreported). The international
student population represents about 12.8% of our total enrollment (for purposes of ethnic classification, all
international students are reported together).
Graduation and Degrees
We award degrees three times a year, at the close of the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. The
Commencement Program printed each May includes the names of degree recipients who graduated that spring as well as
those who graduated the prior fall and summer.
In 2008-09, Washington University in St. Louis awarded a total of 3,818 degrees, of which 2,171
were at the graduate and professional level and 1,647 were at the undergraduate level.
Our graduation rate for first-time freshmen (undergraduate) is 94%.
